Chapter 65 Who is being blown by the strong wind?
"Hey, Carlo, is this a new friend?"
The people at the camp greeted Carlo, but Carlo seemed nervous. He looked everyone over and responded to the campers' enthusiasm with only nods.
Jack only spoke after Carlo and Jack had finally managed to get out of the camp.
"Hey buddy, don't act like you're guarding against a thief. Otherwise, people will know we're going to do something shady without asking!"
Carlo got into the car, his hands gripping the steering wheel tightly, his fingertips turning white.
"Uh, sorry."
Caro stepped on the gas, but the car didn't move. Caro then stepped on the gas a few more times.
Jack, who was in the passenger seat, couldn't stand it anymore, so he pressed the start button for Carlo.
Carlo forced a stiff smile.
"Thank you."
Throughout the journey, Carlo was in a daze, and he would occasionally veer off the road and crash into cacti in the wasteland.
Jack broke out in a cold sweat. Good heavens, if this were in Night City, this kid Carol would definitely be mistaken for a cyber lunatic and then blown up by the terrorist squad along with his car.
"Hey, Carlo, what are you doing?"
Seeing Carlo veer off course and crash into a large rock once again, Jack couldn't help but shout a warning to Carlo, saying that if they crashed into it, they would both be in serious trouble.
Carlo was also brought back to his senses by the shout. He slammed on the brakes and then gently turned the steering wheel.
After Carlo did that, Jack refused to ride in Carlo's car anymore.
He got out of the car, lit a cigarette, and checked the messages Vito had sent him.
"If Carlo is in trouble, give him a bullet."
Jack scratched his head. He found this Carlo strange; he seemed to be acting like a guilty thief.
To avoid killing the wrong person, Jack handed Carol a cigarette, who was staring blankly in the driver's seat.
"Dude, why aren't you focused on the business? At this rate, we'll be done for before we even reach the Adcado camp."
Carlo accepted the cigarette as if it were a wooden doll, only reacting suddenly after hearing Adcardo's name.
"Oh no, we need to ask Adcardo's people for camp locations to find their camp!"
Jack was completely speechless. This kid usually seemed quite reliable, so how come he's completely flustered now and can't even do the most basic things right?
He patted Carlo on the back.
"It's alright, it's not too late to ask now. Why don't you get out and calm down first, I'll drive?"
Carlo took a deep breath in the driver's seat, then slapped himself a few times, muttering something under his breath.
This startling behavior almost made Jack draw his golden shrew and shoot Carlo.
Carlo got out of the car, looking at Jack with the disdain he was giving him.
"Sorry, friend, I'm just thinking about a lot of things. Please drive me, I'm going to call Adcardo's people."
Carlo now seems to have returned to his usual self.
Jack threw the half-smoked cigarette onto the wasteland and got into the driver's seat.
"Okay, I've uploaded the coordinates to the car. Just follow the holographic navigation."
Carlo quickly contacted Mitch in Adcado, whose leader, Saul, had already spoken to Max by phone.
Halfway through the journey, Carlo suddenly asked Jack a question.
"Jack, how do you mercenaries deal with traitors?"
Jack thought for a moment, then replied.
"I haven't been a mercenary for long, and our team hasn't had any traitors, but I heard back when I was in the gang that a mole was put into an oil drum and burned alive."
Carlo swallowed hard and asked awkwardly.
"You've been involved in gangs before?"
"I grew up in Heywood, where a lot of the kids were involved in gangs, the Valentino gang. Later I quit, met Vito, and started doing freelance work."
"So you haven't known Vito for more than a few years?"
"Not long, but how should I put it, I feel like Vito has known me for quite a while, and he's very much to my liking. The first time we drank together, we became sworn brothers and formed a small team, and the next day we went to do our first job together."
Carlo thought that Vito, such a ruthless character, had been in the business for many years, and he seemed very interested, so he continued to ask.
"I thought you two were old friends. The way you two interacted made it seem like you'd known each other for a long time."
"Vito's approach to making friends is just like his trademark: precise and efficient."
"Isn't this your team's label?"
Jack smiled.
"Our team's reputation was built by Vito; I didn't contribute much."
Carlo tentatively asked.
"Do you think Vito will betray you one day?"
Upon hearing this question, Jack frowned, thinking to himself, "What kind of bullshit question is this?"
"Vito won't betray me; I don't have anything worth selling."
After asking his question, Carlo returned to silence.
Jack glanced at Carlo, and he now estimated that Carlo most likely knew who the mole was.
The road conditions in the wilderness are very poor, and even a car with a good suspension system can't avoid bumps when two people are driving.
When they arrived at the Adcado camp, Jack felt his back stiffen considerably.
"Hi, Carlo, long time no see. You don't look well."
"Hey Mitch, long time no see. This is Jack, a family friend. Is our shipment ready?"
Mitch came up and greeted Carlo.
"Everything is ready, we can leave anytime. But, is it just the two of you? I've heard that ghosts have been causing trouble everywhere lately."
"You have to help me transport this shipment by armed escort. Max will give you extra money. Our family recently lost a group of men and can't come to collect this shipment."
Mitch hesitated for a moment after listening, then spoke.
"Max didn't seem to tell Thor. I'll go ask Thor."
Just then, a hooded man carried a case of beer to the side of the car and handed two bottles to Carlo and Jack.
"So rushed this time? Couldn't you even sit down at the campsite for a bit?"
Carlo used his prosthetic arm to open the bottle, poured most of it into his mouth, and let out a burp.
"This is urgent. Those guys from the Bayonet Gang are like mad dogs, relentlessly attacking the Snake Gang. Anyway, Scorpion, why are you dressed like that in this heat? Aren't you afraid of getting heat rash?"
The scorpion accepted the joke.
"That's still cooler than your friend wearing a leather jacket."
"To be honest, I feel like the wasteland isn't as hot as Night City. My name is Jack, and what's yours, friend?"
"They all call me Scorpion, you can call me that too."
"What kind of nickname is that?"
"That was my code name in the military."
The three were drinking beer and chatting when a girl with her hair in a bun, carrying a sniper rifle, walked past them.
"Hey, Scorpion. Hey, Carlo, what brings you to the camp?"
"I'm here to pick up a batch of goods."
"OK, I have something to do today. Let's drink together again next time, and remember to invite Sammy too."
"Uh, okay, goodbye, Panan."
Carlo's expression became unnatural again after hearing the name Sami.
