111. Husband and wife
The sky was overcast, as if someone had wiped it with a dirty rag. Occasionally, a few crows would fly overhead, emitting a sharp cry or two.
Norn rode on Arno's back, wandering aimlessly across the vast fields.
All around was an endless expanse of wasteland, the lush green grass rustling in the wind.
Norn has no map and doesn't know where the Howling Dungeon is; he can only hope to find a stranger on the road.
The surrounding area was desolate, with not a soul in sight. The only sign of human presence was the dirt road worn into the ground beneath our feet.
After passing through a sparse grove of low bushes, Norn saw a small black dot suddenly appear in the distant field.
It was a small carriage, which looked particularly frail against the vast field.
"Chase after them!"
After Norn gave the order, Arno immediately took two strides, each step covering several meters, his gray-black body flying across the field like an arrow released from a bow.
The wind whistled past Norn's ears, making his robes flutter. The surrounding scenery rushed past, the green grass, the scattered trees, and the distant hills all turning into blurry patches of color.
As the carriage drew closer, its outline gradually became clearer.
It was a small carriage pulled by an old brown horse, with several bulging sacks and some pots, pans, and other odds and ends tied to the roof. The curtain was made of dark green canvas with several patches on it.
The driver was a middle-aged man, wearing a tattered felt hat and with a blade of grass in his mouth.
Hearing the noise behind him, the man turned around and looked back.
Good heavens, a big guy covered in rags is running towards me carrying someone on his back!
The man sensed that the newcomer was up to no good, and raised his whip to lash the horse's rump hard.
The old horse, in pain, neighed and stomped its hooves on the ground, causing the carriage to accelerate rapidly. The wheels left two deep tracks on the dirt road, and the dust kicked up formed a long trail of smoke behind the carriage.
But even the fastest horse can't outrun Arnold at full speed.
With a loud bang, the man turned around and saw that the strange man was gone, but the next second Arno landed heavily in front of the carriage from the air.
The man yanked the reins hard, bringing the horse to a halt. The old horse reared up on its hind legs, letting out a terrified neigh, and the carriage shook violently, causing the pots and pans on the roof to rattle and clatter.
The carriage door opened, and a woman's face peeked out, looking somewhat flustered.
"What's wrong, darling?"
"Grab your weapons! We're in trouble." The man said, drawing his longsword from his waist.
Norn's eyes swept over the two men, noticing their standard adventurer attire, and he immediately realized they were adventurers as well.
"Who are you? Why are you stopping us?" the woman asked, holding up a short knife.
"Calm down, we mean no harm. Judging from your attire, you're adventurers, right?"
Norn jumped off Arno's shoulder, raised his hands, and asked with a smile.
The man narrowed his eyes, then quickly glanced around, as if he felt Norn was drawing attention.
After confirming that no one was around, the man nodded: "So what if I am?"
"So where are you headed now?"
"Of course, we'll go to the Howling Dungeon! Where else can adventurers go besides dungeons?" the woman chimed in.
Norn's eyes lit up instantly. "What a coincidence! I'm going to the Howling Dungeon too! Can I come with you?"
The man decisively shook his head, immediately refusing Norn: "No way, only a fool would travel with weirdos of unknown origin like you. Get out of our way, or don't blame me for being impolite!"
As he spoke, the man pulled a pendant from his pocket; a golden adventurer's badge hung from a thin hemp rope.
Upon seeing the badge, Norn instantly understood why the man had acted so calmly.
A Gold-level adventurer is a rare find, and he would be the backbone of any ordinary team. Most people are no match for him.
"That makes sense. Excuse me." Norn bowed slightly and then made way for them.
The couple were somewhat surprised by Norn's reaction.
The man sheathed his longsword, began to steer the horse with his left hand, and kept his right hand on the hilt of the sword until the carriage had gone far away.
Norn stood there, watching the carriage gradually disappear into the distance across the grassland.
Of course, he wouldn't let this guide go, so he flipped himself onto Arno's back, patted its head, and said, "Come on, follow them, but don't get too close."
Arno strode forward, following the covered route Norn had indicated, keeping a distance of only a small dot between himself and the carriage.
The carriage moved forward, stopping and starting, with the man glancing back every now and then, clearly still wary of them.
But each time he turned around, all he saw were empty fields and weeds swaying in the wind; there was nothing unusual in sight.
As darkness fell, the sun slowly sank below the horizon, and the moon rose into the sky to take over the role of providing illumination.
Under the cover of darkness, Norn had Arno close the distance so as not to lose them.
The carriage stopped, and the man jumped off and found a place to urinate.
The woman gathered some wood and weeds, stacked them high on top of each other, and then lit a fire with a flint and steel.
The man brought over a slightly rusty dish, filled it with all sorts of random ingredients, and put it on the fire to fry and grill. The two ate and chatted at the same time.
Suddenly, as if they had reached some kind of consensus, they tacitly finished the remaining food, cleaned up the dishes, put out the fire with a few handfuls of sand, and then climbed into the carriage together.
The patched canvas curtain was pulled down, obscuring what was inside.
After a while, the dim light of an oil lamp shone through the gap in the carriage curtain.
Then, the carriage began to rock rhythmically...
Norn watched this scene from a small hill not far away, with Arno lying beside him, his gray-black body almost blending into the night.
"These two really have a good relationship." Norn couldn't help but think of the woman who seduced him at the manor, and his mind began to simulate the intoxicating scene of that night.
He glanced at Arno, perhaps his appetite whetted by the sight of the couple eating. Arno was now listlessly plucking at the withered grass on the hill and stuffing it into his mouth, showing no interest in the carriage in the distance.
Just then, Norn's gaze inadvertently swept over the bushes not far from the carriage, and several unusual dark figures caught his attention.
At first he thought it was bushes, but he quickly dismissed the idea.
The dark figures were moving and slowly approaching the carriage; it was clear that thieves had their eyes on them.
The couple, however, were still engrossed in their carnal revelry and completely unaware of this.
