113. Motu Village
The man slowly opened his eyes in the carriage; his head was covered by a cloth.
My thoughts swirled in my mind, and last night's memories pieced together like fragments of a shattered mirror.
The man sat up abruptly, his head spinning violently again. After the nausea subsided, he staggered out.
The morning breeze carried the scent of grass and earth, and the sunlight was a bit dazzling. He squinted, and his vision gradually cleared.
Right next to the carriage, the man saw the two robbers from the previous night sitting on the ground, one of them holding half a mangled corpse in his arms.
The tall, strange man, his mouth full of blood, was gnawing on it with relish.
The man's pupils contracted sharply as a terrifying thought flashed through his mind.
It's Daisy.
That bastard ate his Daisy!
"Daisy!!!"
Koroya's eyes instantly turned blood red, and his mouth trembled violently.
He didn't even bother to grab his sword, charging at the strange man with his bare hands.
"Honey! What are you doing!"
A woman's voice came from behind, and Koroya's body stiffened abruptly.
He turned his head and saw Daisy walking out of the grove behind him, carrying a bundle of dry branches in her arms, with a few leaves stuck in her hair and a smile on her face.
"You...this is..." Chloe's voice trembled slightly, his gaze shifting back and forth between Daisy and the corpse.
Seeing Chloe's confusion, Daisy chuckled and quickly explained:
"Lord Homan is a good man. We wronged him. The thieves from last night were killed by them."
"So what this guy has in his hand is..." Koroya looked at the half-eaten corpse of Arno.
"They are the corpses of those thieves." With that, Norn pulled the tattered cloth off Arno's head, revealing his horrifying face.
"It had been hungry for a long time, so I let it eat those corpses."
Koroya looked at Arno as if he wanted to ask something, but swallowed the words back.
He wasn't particularly curious about the man-eating creature, as long as it wasn't dangerous.
Norn covered Arno's face again and asked, "Koroa, can you take us to the Howling Dungeon?"
Koroya thought for a moment and then nodded. "Okay."
In fact, he had no choice but to agree. After last night's confrontation, Koroya clearly realized the gap between himself and this monster. If he kept refusing, Norn could force him to lead the way with his fists.
Compared to Chloe's wariness, Daisy was much more friendly towards Norn and the others.
She squatted down, piled the firewood and weeds in her arms into a stack, and then took out a flint and steel from her bosom to light the fire.
"Honey, could you bring the dry rations over?" Daisy asked Chloe.
Colloy knew they didn't have the habit of cooking breakfast, and he did this to thank the two of them.
He turned and walked back into the carriage. When he came out again, he had a cloth bag in his hand. He opened it and found some dry, brownish-yellow lumps and half a smoked sausage inside.
Daisy poured the brownish-yellow lumps into her portable iron pot, added sliced sausages, poured in half a bottle of water, and then put it on the fire to fry.
She stirred it with a wooden stick, and the small clump in the pot quickly expanded, turning into a pot of thick, yellowish-brown paste.
"This is... yellow mud?" Norn looked at the yellowish-brown color and thought of the feed that Batel fed to those demi-human girls.
"No, that's for animals. This is dry rations we make ourselves. Don't be fooled by the small amount; it can last us a day."
As Daisy spoke, she divided the porridge in the pot into four portions, served them in wooden bowls, and handed them to each person.
Arno grabbed a fist-sized amount of paste, threw it into his mouth, and swallowed it without chewing.
During the meal, everyone reintroduced themselves.
The couple came from Rot River Town; Chloe was a Gold-rank adventurer, while Daisy was only a Bronze-rank.
To conceal his identity, Norn used the alias Homan, saying that he had to become an adventurer due to certain circumstances.
"Why did you go to the Howling Dungeon? Wouldn't it have been better to stay in the Rotten River Dungeon?" Norn asked.
Koroya sighed and replied, "The Rotten River Underground City has been shut down."
Norn was taken aback. "Shut down? What happened?"
"Ever since the last abyss riot, a bunch of strange things have happened in the dungeon."
"First, there were rumors that monsters were training in Warren Valley, and then people saw small teams of different monsters patrolling the dungeon."
"There's something even more outrageous coming up!" Daisy chimed in.
"After a riot, don't you always send surveyors down to investigate the anomalies? One of the surveyors, who was a Diamond-level adventurer, died."
"It wouldn't be surprising if he was killed by some powerful monster, but his teammates said he was killed by a pack of goblins and black wolves!"
Norn's eyes widened instantly. "Are you kidding me? Aren't those the lowest-ranking monsters in the dungeon?"
"Those mindless monsters seemed to be led by something, and they started to work in teams. That's how the goblin squad wore down the surveyor. Who knew that those beasts would be so terrifying once they gained intelligence?"
"The guild immediately sealed off the entrance after learning about this," Koroya continued.
"At first, they said it was a temporary lockdown, but they never released any news about lifting the lockdown. In the end, they actually blocked the door with rune boulders."
It was obvious to everyone that there was no hope of unsealing the dungeon. Seeing there was no money to be made, the adventurers didn't linger and quickly fled to other dungeons; we were among them.
Daisy continued, "Even the Golden Wood Tavern is deserted, so the owner sold the entire premises to the guild. Now the tavern has truly become a branch of the guild."
Then, as if they had opened a floodgate, the two began to share the outrageous rumors that had come from the town of Rotten River.
Things like monsters have already built castles and developed kingdoms, monster armies are preparing to counterattack the ground, and evil gods are about to be resurrected.
Norn's attention wandered after listening for only a short while; he was wondering if this anomaly was related to him.
After thinking for a long time, apart from the fitness club in Warren Valley, it seemed that none of the others had anything to do with me.
"Forget it, I don't want to think about it. Anyway, I'm not going back." Norn cleared his mind and focused on finishing the bowl of hard-to-swallow porridge.
Believe it or not, once this stuff entered my stomach, it started to swell up like a giant bubble, and Norn quickly felt completely full.
After everyone finished eating, Daisy cleaned up the dishes and put the iron pot and wooden bowl back into the carriage.
Koroya jumped into the driver's seat and pulled on the reins.
"Let's go, we should be able to reach Desert Village before dark. The Howling Dungeon is right there."
Norn flipped over and mounted Arno's back, following behind the carriage.
The dirt road stretched forward, flanked by grassy fields on both sides. Before we knew it, the surrounding area had transformed from lush green grass into a sparse wasteland.
Just before the sun was about to sink below the distant mountain peaks, Norn and his companions climbed a high mountain along a man-made road.
In the center of a basin surrounded by mountains, there are densely packed houses.
That place is Motu Village.
