124. Cave entrance
Norn rapidly descended into the whirlpool, the surrounding darkness gradually dissipating, and the light from above illuminated the surrounding water as a vibrant green.
He then realized that he had started to rise to the surface without realizing it.
The surrounding water was no longer the icy, deep blue of a deep abyss, but had turned into a warm, bright turquoise, as if one had suddenly swum from the cold deep sea into a tropical shallow beach.
puff--
Norn surfaced, his crimson shield separating him from the surrounding water, forming a small oval-shaped crater on the surface that swelled and shrank with each rise and fall.
"Finally out." He looked down at the water.
The turquoise lake water was very clear and even emitted a green glow.
In addition, the lake water has a great buoyancy. Norn tried to shrink the size of the Crimson Shield, but it did not sink.
"Looks like getting from the Abyss Pool to the Ninth Floor is a one-way ticket," Norn muttered to himself.
Looking around, he found himself in the center of a turquoise pool, surrounded by rugged black rock walls, which appeared to be inside a cave.
The entire cave was empty, and there was no sign of Shared or his companions.
"What's going on? Haven't they arrived yet?"
"Or did they all die in the abyss?"
Norn pondered for a moment, and a guess formed in his mind:
It's likely that because he enlarged the shield to relax his limbs, his descent was much slower than the others. They arrived first, didn't see him, and left.
Norn swam ashore, and what he discovered next further confirmed his earlier conjecture.
In a corner of the cave, there is a pile of rubble.
Norn walked over, and as soon as he cleared away some rubble, a hand emerged from it.
Norn recognized the hand shape immediately; it was his own hand.
When Shared and his companions realized that he wouldn't wake up, and that they couldn't possibly continue their journey with him, they buried him on the spot.
Norn pulled his brain back, and the next second the pile of rubble collapsed, with rocks tumbling all over the ground. Norn sat up from the rubble.
Arno was clearly used to this feeling of mental blankness, and without much doubt, he reached out and pulled Norn up.
Norn got up and brushed the dust off his clothes. His gaze inadvertently swept across the ground, where he saw several messy footprints made of water.
The footprints led to a cave entrance, and judging from the dampness, Shared and his group hadn't gone far.
"Let's go, Arno, we need to catch up with them quickly," Arno said, walking towards the cave entrance.
Arno followed behind, his gray-black boots making a dull thud on the rocks.
It was pitch black inside the cave; you couldn't see anything.
Norn used illumination magic to summon a ball of light, and with the help of the light, he continued forward following the watery footprints on the ground.
The passageway inside the cave is not wide, only wide enough for two or three people to walk side by side. The stone walls on both sides are uneven, and in some places there are long stalactites with water dripping from their tops, making a dripping sound when they fall to the ground. There is a faint musty smell and a fishy smell in the air.
Suddenly, something on the rock wall caught Norn's attention.
Norn raised his hand to stop Arno, brought the ball of light closer to the rock wall, and squinted to examine it closely.
An arrowhead, carved by human hands, is imprinted on the surface; its edges are somewhat weathered, indicating it wasn't carved recently. Below the arrow are two characters:
"exit"
It's obvious that this wasn't carved to guide me.
This wasn't the first time Shared had conducted this expedition. Judging from his experience diving into the abyss, he probably used this shortcut to reach the ninth level last time as well.
This arrow was probably a mark he made for his next inspection.
After that, every so often, an arrow would appear on the rock face, sometimes carved at a corner, sometimes on the rock face at a fork in the road.
Even though the water stains on the ground had almost disappeared, Norn could still tell which way they were going, thanks to them.
Guided by the arrow, Norn led Arno through a maze of caves for a long time, but they found no trace of Sharred and the others.
Norn couldn't help but wonder if they had actually followed the arrow, or if they had been wiped out by some unknown monster.
This is not impossible, after all, there was a being like Barnabas II, which far surpassed the steel grade, on the eighth floor of the Rotten River Underground City.
This is the ninth floor of the Howling Dungeon. Even with a team like Sharred's, it wouldn't be surprising if they all died tragically if they weren't careful.
Who knows, we might just see their mangled corpses lying on the ground around some corner ahead?
With this thought in mind, Norn continued to follow the arrow's direction, but the horrific scene did not occur.
On a rugged, steep rock face, Norn found the last arrow.
The arrow points upwards, and the words "Exit is above" are engraved below.
Norn looked up and saw a bright white hole not far from the top of the rock wall; that was the exit connecting to the outside world!
"Arno, climb up!" Norn said, then climbed onto Arno's shoulder.
Arno slammed his hands into the rock wall, then used his abnormal arm strength to pull his body upwards, without giving a second thought to the protrusions and cracks.
Using this almost barbaric climbing method, they quickly left the rock face.
Arno started running towards the cave entrance, the sound of his footsteps echoing around them. The cave entrance was getting closer and closer to Norn and the others, but what Norn discovered next made him quickly call Arno to stop.
The hole was not empty; it was covered by a layer of netting.
Upon closer inspection, the mesh was actually several layers of overlapping spider webs, with a few black, unidentified fragments stuck to it, and three large spider silhouettes slowly crawling on it.
"Damn, did these guys eat Sharred and the others?" Norn had a bad feeling.
The vibrations caused by their running also reached the spider web, and the three giant spiders lurking on it sensed the arrival of their prey and looked up at Norn and his companions.
One of them jumped off the web, and its eight bristled appendages swiftly charged towards Norn and his companions in alternating leaps.
"Who cares? Just check the remains on the spider web to see if he's dead or not."
Norn jumped off Arno's shoulder and ordered it, "Kill it!"
Arnold raised his right arm, his clothes instantly bulging from the muscles underneath, with specks of red electricity dancing around his fist.
The spider opened its massive jaws and charged straight at Arno, only to run into Arno's fist.
The immense force caused its entire face to cave in, and terrifying red lightning erupted instantly from within!
With a loud bang!
The front half of the spider's body was completely blown apart, with its internal organs and flesh mixed with green blood splattering everywhere.
Only the massive abdomen was propelled into the air by the impact before falling to the ground, from which countless spiderlings scattered and fled.
