16.3 lines of defense
On the first level of the Rotten River Underground City, the last cavalry unit returned to their encampment, thus concluding the mission to warn of the impending riot.
The cavalry's notification range is limited to the first three levels. Some of the stronger ones will voluntarily go to the fourth level, but there will be no one below that.
Because any adventurer who dares to venture to the fifth floor or below is no pushover; they will all possess at least Gold-level strength.
They only need to find a place to hide, and once those deep-level monsters have moved to the upper levels, the deeper levels will be even safer than the first level.
Outside the dungeon, temporary tents were set up by the Adventurers' Guild to recruit adventurers.
Players below Gold rank receive 8 gold coins each, while players above Gold rank receive 16 gold coins each.
Lured by the money, long lines formed in front of the tents, with some even traveling from other dungeons to join the battle.
In addition to the fighting forces recruited by these guilds, the kingdom also sent a small army and dozens of runestones to provide support.
The massive rocks, covered in golden runes, were piled on carts and slowly pushed into the underground city by soldiers.
These megaliths were made by the extinct dwarves of the north, and could be assembled into Titans through magical manipulation.
Pinas used it as the third line of defense.
The first line of defense before this is a five-layered fiery barrier, used to block and kill low-level monsters.
The second line of defense was a long corridor of trap arrays.
The mages set up magic arrays on the ground, such as those for explosive fire, freezing ice, and deadly poison, to further hinder and kill the monsters.
President Pinas led several magic advisors back and forth along the first two lines of defense, checking and directing operations to prevent any mistakes.
"President, did you hear anything?"
A magic advisor suddenly spoke.
Pinas paused, then listened intently. The distant, noisy running sounds gradually became clearer.
Looking back, plumes of dust rose as hordes of goblins, black wolves, and other monsters charged toward them.
"So fast!?"
Pinas steadied himself and immediately ordered, "Raise the barrier, activate the magic array!"
More than a dozen high-level mages worked together to create five orange-red, semi-transparent barriers that instantly rose up, with various runes floating on them.
The first wave of monsters crashed into the barrier, and a sizzling sound like roasting meat filled the air. The monsters at the forefront were instantly turned into charred remains.
Soon, the group of demons were all killed. The best performer only took two steps in the magic circle corridor before being blown into blood and gore.
The adventurers watching from behind burst into laughter, marveling at how easy it was to make money.
With such powerful magic arrays and barriers, hiring them is really a waste of money.
Looking at these arrogant fools, Pinas couldn't help but feel a little sorry for them.
Because abyssal riots are extremely rare and unpredictable, most adventurers may never encounter one in their lifetime, and therefore they are unaware of the terror of abyssal riots.
This is the first abyssal riot that the Decaying River Dungeon has ever witnessed. The most recent riot occurred more than 80 years ago in the Howling Dungeon.
As the president, Pinas has a record of all the abyssal riots in human history. There are very few successful cases of resisting them, and each time the casualties are extremely heavy.
Pinas himself was unsure whether he could survive this ordeal, so he arranged for a strong horse to be ready to escape at any time.
Pinas walked into the combat command room that had been temporarily set up for him at the outpost. At that moment, another wave of monsters rushed up, and the crowd below became excited again.
"Damn it, it's so noisy!"
Pinas was annoyed by the noise and kicked a cabinet next to him.
The cabinet shook violently, and a book fell down.
"What is it?"
Pinas picked it up and opened it; it was a sketchbook filled with drawings of exciting things, and the artist's skills were quite good.
"These people usually read this kind of stuff to pass the time," Pinas chuckled, intending to relieve some stress with the book.
The plane was already on the way, and the flight was about to take off when the door was suddenly kicked open.
Pinas hurriedly pulled up his pants, but he used too much force and fell backward, chair and all.
"Hey! Don't you guys know how to knock?! When the monsters charge in, I'll throw you all at them first..."
The newcomer walked up to him, and Pinas saw her face clearly, immediately swallowing his words.
Pinas could never forget that cold and alluring face, which he had seen two years ago.
Lisfield, the former leader of the Sword Saint Order of the Holy Knights, a genius swordsman known as the Moonlight Reaper!
"You're President Pinas?" Lisfield asked.
"Ah? Ahem! Yes, I am, may I ask who you are...?"
Do you know how big of a mess you've made?
Pinas looked completely bewildered. "Could you explain it more clearly? I don't understand."
"Austin Scalander, daughter of Lord William Scalander, the lord of the Prontia region, has registered as an adventurer with you! She's currently doing a quest in the dungeon!"
Lisfield's words plunged Pinas into an icy abyss, his heart skipping a beat.
"Impossible, right? Why would a young lady like you stay home and enjoy your life instead of coming here to be an adventurer? You're so funny, Lady Riesfield."
Lisfield grabbed Pinas by the collar and lifted him up effortlessly.
"Now is not the time for your glib talk! Tell me right now what mission the young lady has taken on. We must bring her back immediately before the riots really begin!"
If anything happens to the young lady, you know what will happen to you!
Lisfield's gaze was as sharp as two daggers, and Pinas was already drenched in sweat.
At the outpost, everyone's attention was drawn to the endless stream of monsters.
The light emitted by the trap array was accompanied by explosions, and the scorching smell of the monster corpses could be smelled from dozens of meters away.
Some of the adventurers, however, were quite interested in the few people standing nearby.
These people were well-equipped and had an extraordinary presence; among them were even two Steel-level adventurers!
At this moment, a tall, slender woman with purple hair, dressed in silver-white armor, followed Guild Master Pinas out of the base.
"Liesfield, have you figured out where Austin is?"
Louisa quickly asked.
"The fifth layer of thorny forest."
"Okay, let's go there quickly."
Louisa got up, put on her Archmage's Hat, and led the group toward the dungeon.
"Stop!? Guild Master, can't you see how many monsters there are? If you stop these magic circles and barriers now, these monsters will charge at us!"
The magic advisor thought Pinas had lost his mind, actually trying to shut down the defenses at this critical juncture.
"Do as I say, let them into the dungeon."
Pinas pointed to Louisa and the others.
The magic advisor couldn't persuade him otherwise and had to compromise.
Soon, the barrier and trap array stopped simultaneously, and the unhindered monsters surged in like a tide.
"Hey! Why is it off!?"
"Holy crap! They're charging at us! Draw your sword!"
The adventurers panicked and hurriedly drew their weapons to defend themselves, but what they saw left them speechless.
Louisa raised her wand and gently tapped the ground, the pale blue magic crystal on the wand shimmering faintly.
A thin wisp of cold air rose in front of Louisa and spread to both sides until it blocked the entire intersection.
The moment those monsters hit the cold air, they were instantly frozen into ice sculptures.
The group ran quickly, leaving frozen monsters in their wake.
A short while later, the group disappeared, and almost all the monsters on the scene were turned into ice sculptures.
